Newgrounds in a Box

Posted by EON - August 8th, 2007

*UPDATE* A mac version is now available for download here!

So I've just submitted Newgrounds in a Box, and the comments seems to be pretty much polar, either "WOW dis shiz is teh awesum !!1 ur a GOD" or "This is completely pointless. I can just go to NG and see exactly the same information. Die in a hole."
Both are slight exaggerations, but you get the point. I don't have a problem with the former, but it annoys me when people say they don't see the point in it, as all the info is on NG already. This isn't the point. The point is it has all the main information within one 730x600 box, without having to flick through various pages and wade through unnecessary infomation. It's an 'at-a-glance' summary, designed to be a convenient way of keeping up to date.
The other main point is that it is downloadable, so you can actually use it as a stand-alone application on your desktop so you can check up on the latest happenings without even touching your web browser.

I perfectly understand the "I don't see the point" argument, but just bare in mind what it's for. It simply collects various data and displays it in one box for your convenience. Anyway, click here to download it.

Also I've just been contacted by Louis, he suggested teaming up to make an even better version of NGiaB using Adobe AIR, to make it a proper desktop application with even more infomation and features, so look out for that.

this is pretty ingenious,

I plan to link it to the guys at the office so they can play around with it.

Yeah, it's cool to see what can be done with NG's data if we make it more accessible. We've been wanting to put together RSS feeds for as much as possible and this is big inspiration to follow through with it sooner rather than later. It is a cool way for people to show us how we could better format our own data, and the more data we give people, the more new infered data they can create from it. :)

I hear you buddy, there are some people for whom this "application" is not for, they will most likely give you shitty and pointless reviews (please note: I didn't say low scoring reviews).

To be honest, I kinda liked it, I know that I will be visiting NG for fresh submits, frontpage and stuff like that but I kinda like the little gadget app.

I think you should be proud of yourself, you pulled of the thing nicely

This is great. I'm so downloading this right now. Good job.

I really enjoy it, myself.
I love how it's just all the information in one small place... very easy navigation and so forth.
I'm guessing that with what you've done here, it would also possibly be possible to not only RECEIVE info from Newgrounds, but possibly even write information to newgrounds, meaning that someone could take this a step further and make a fully-functioning flash version of Newgrounds, or just of the Newgrounds BBS.
Either way, it would be cool.

well the current system uses RSS, so it can only get the data. A whole flash version of NG would actually be a cool idea though. I've been talking with friends about making a kind of game version of NG, like a MMORPG where you control a character and go around interacting with NG like that. (we'd have to convince Tom to give us access to the NG server first though.. *ahemhint*)

Haha
That would be fucking amazing.
Seriously, that would be the best game in existence.
The only thing that I'd be worried about as a NG staff member would be the possibility that people stop using the site and just start using the flash version :P
It would be very likely to happen...
But either way, it would be absolutely amazing.

NG in a box.
HOW GENIOUS! Man, no more booting Firefox and reading 50 pages to get to know what has changed! AHH! ur a GOD!
Too bad it's a exe, cant run it on Linux or Mac, or BSD >:/

OFF-TOPIC: Lol, first time i saw TomsĀ“ reply on a non-staffmembers userpage. Yay.

me to! *honored*

That is so useful. Great job. If only newgrounds were this convenient i may bookmark it someday.

The reason they don't see the point is most likely because they already have a broswer to look at newgrounds with, however this could easily be the prototype for something even better although I'm not sure what right now...

Lame-ass. This is genious! Can't wait for the .dmg version for mac, if it'll ever come :'(.

wow NG in a box
i just go there instead of NG.com

Hey sweet you're the dude that made NGAP Radio! I love that thing...but can you make a second version of it? Please? Because that'd be so freaking awesome. Right anyways, NG In a Box is actually wicked cool too! Uhm...yep all I got. It's niceness continues to amaze me, but we need an NGAP Radio 2...

what would be even better is if you can make it a Windows Vista Gadget... that would be awesome

It would, but I don't like Vista. Things.. happened between us. Unpleasant things. It now no longer returns my calls.

two word...

EON RULEZ!

nuff said :)

Its neat. I like it because its Quick box. It's got it all (Cept BBS updates but whatev)

People who say go die.. they need to pick up a box of flash and match this work.

I find it to be a great tool. It seems to be something that you hate, or you love. I personally love it. It's great, have breakfast, look at one gadget, in five minutes I'm ready to go.

i got 1st on your football game
im beter than you
(just joks) but it was good

What would be a useful expansion.

1. Current top 5 (top 5 of the day currently, so you can see if you want to submit your game in order to get an award). It's sad that we do it, but we do it but I'm sure others have too.

2. Google widgit, the current NG one's aren't so pretty. In fact, there are only 2 i think and one of them doesn't work. Perhaps you could create a nicer one with a NG based colour scheme/images.

I never thought you would make a mac version... that's nice

i still get the same information from newgrounds.com/index.

lets see, news; yeah check.
audio; yeah its down there, check.
latest submissions; yeah got that.
best of the week? there it is; check.

whatever, im not gonna fight. ill shut up now.
